6th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Year End Review

The homeschool curriculum choices blog posts are great, but what I really want to know is what families thought AFTER they used the curriculum they chose! I will be sharing a series of posts with you; evaluating our choices in each grade level from this homeschool year.

We shared our 3rd grade year-end review here. Next up, 6th grade!  Here’s a reminder of the original 6th Grade Curriculum Choices post.

6th Grade Subjects

Below I will give a small review of each subject, if you have more specific questions about anything, just leave me a comment and I will do my best to answer!

Math ~ Teaching Textbooks 7

Teaching Textbooks 7 was a great fit and he will be moving on to TT Pre Algebra in the fall, using the web based 3.0 version {see our review here}. He normally scores between a 90-100 on the lessons an we step in to check on issues if he scores below that. He has worked independently this year for the most part, coming to us when something is confusing.

            • The Reading Comprehension book we used was perfect for him and his end of grade testing scores improved GREATLY in this area! It was one of my main focuses with him, and we used this book to discuss many test taking strategies and skills. Plus, he learned a lot of random stuff from this book!

He read the following books from his list independently:

  • Wonder
  • Rules
  • Bridge to Tarabithia
  • Out of My Mind
  • Theras and His Town

We read the following books together:

  • The Master Puppeteer
  • Esperanza Rising
  • Daniel and the Siege at Boston

We enjoyed reading with our pets {including chickens} this year. Winking smile

Writing ~ IEW Ancient History

This was SUCH a good move for us! He still doesn’t LOVE writing, but IEW is a much better fit for him {and me}. I planned to take it slowly, and we finished a bit over half of this book. We will pick it back up in the fall and then decide which IEW theme to do after he completes this one!

Geography ~ USA Focus, live video here on Facebook!

He needed some simple USA States and Capitals review so we focused on that this year with my State By State notebook, and States and Capitals Quizzes.

USA-State-By-State-1-of-1

State-By-State-3

Spelling ~ All About Spelling Level 6, Vocabulary ~ Spectrum 6, Grammar ~ Growing with Grammar Level 6

Nothing too exciting for these three subjects. He completed them, didn’t love them but got them done!

Drop out Subjects

He was scheduled to do Apologia Astronomy with his dad and sister but they made it about a month. He will be moving to a different science curriculum in the fall for 7th grade.

Stay tuned, I will be sharing our year-end review for 10th soon. I will also be sharing our curriculum choices for 11th grade, 7th grade and 4th grade.
